Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon

Mr Evans specialises in a holistic approach to shoulder problems with specific interest in the latest arthroscopic techniques.

Mr Evans grew up in Cardiff and went to University in Nottingham, returning to Wales for my surgical training. Mr Evans completed two Fellowships in Shoulder Surgery and Sports Injury in Sydney, Australia. This trained me in the latest techniques in arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery.

Mr Evans is an active member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and regularly present my latest research projects.

Mr Evans is an Honorary Shoulder Surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union, English Rugby Union, British and Irish Lions, all the welsh regional rugby teams, numerous English Premiership teams, several football and cricket teams.

Dr Mark Ridgewell 

Consultant Musculo-Skeletal and Sports and Exercise Medicine

Mark Ridgewell is a Consultant Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician. Mark's main field is the management of musculoskeletal (bone, muscle and other soft tissue) and overuse injuries across the whole spectrum from elite performers to those who are wishing to undertake low level exercise. He specialises in the prevention and management of overuse injuries all over the body as well as rehabilitation.

Over the last 20 years Mark has gained considerable experience on the management of sporting injuries, specialising in the non-surgical treatment of soft tissue injuries affecting muscles, tendons and ligaments, particularly in the exercising population. Mark  works with world, Olympic and Paralympic champions across several sports.

Mark has excellent communication skills and liaise closely with Physiotherapists, Osteopaths/Chiropractors and Orthopaedic Surgeons to determine the best management plan to bring good outcomes for his patients. Mark understands the significant effects that injury and pain can have on normal day to day life and very much encourage physical activity in my treatment plans.

Mr Rhys Thomas 

Consultant Orthopeadic Foot & Ankle Surgeon

Mr Thomas is the assigned foot and ankle surgeon for the Welsh FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence.

He was awarded the BOA/Wishbone Trust Travelling Fellowship in 2001 and spent a year with Dr Tim Daniels in Toronto where he specialised in adult foot and ankle surgery. 

Subsequent to this he was awarded Travelling Fellowships by both the European and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.   

 Rhys was appointed as a Consultant in Cardiff & Vale UHB in 2003. He set up and supervises the Cardiff foot and ankle Fellowship. 

Rhys served on the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Education Committee from 2015-22.

Rhys is Honorary Surgeon to both the Welsh Rugby Union and Football Association of Wales & was orthopaedic surgeon at the World Cup in Qatar. 

Mr Thomas works with professional and recreational athletes across a wide variety of sports including Premier League & EFL football, English Premiership & URC Rugby and ECB Cricket.  He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Mr Alwyn Jones 

Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon

Mr Jones has been a consultant spinal surgeon in Cardiff since 2004, where he treats all spinal conditions including adult and paediatric deformity (scoliosis), neck and arm pain, back pain and sciatica. Mr Jones also treats spinal fractures with or without spinal cord injury, spinal infections, as well as patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Mr Evans has an interest in sports medicine and treat local rugby players from across the South Wales corridor and over the border, as well as Glamorgan Cricket Club.

Mr Jones performs several minimally invasive procedures including injections, as well as operations on the spine tailored to individual patients’ pathology, which include minimally invasive procedures. 

Mr Jones am a Welsh speaker, graduating from Cardiff in 1993. Mr Jones stayed in Wales to do my basic and orthopaedic training.  He then spent a year in Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, where he completed a national recognised spinal fellowship treating both adult and paediatric spinal conditions. I continue to do this in my current employment.

Mr Jones offers a tailored management plan for my patients with approximately 20 years of clinical experience in this speciality. 

Mr D. Phillip Thomas

Orthopaedic Hip Surgeon

Mr Thomas is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon and Honorary University Lecturer at the University of Wales Hospital Cardiff.

Mr Thomas has expertise in treating elite and professionals athletes with hip problems and is the orthopaedic surgeon for the Scarlets rugby team. He is also orthopaedic surgeon to the senior Wales rugby team. He works closely with a multidisciplinary team in this role.

Mr Thomas is trained to offer the vast majority of surgical hip procedures including hip arthroscopy, hip osteotomy, minimally invasive hip replacement and traditional hip replacement. He utilises the most up to date techniques and materials as many of his patients requiring surgery are younger than average. He believes strongly that the patient should be well informed and involved in their treatment. By being part of the decision making about whether an operation is needed and if so what type, the patient becomes part of the team, making informed choices for themselves at every stage. 

He frequently lectures and presents publications on his areas of expertise.
 
Phill is born and bred in West Wales and is happy to conduct consultations in his first language of Welsh if requested.

Mr Chris Wilson

Consultant Knee Surgeon

Mr Chris Wilson has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon for over 25 years. He was Clinical Director in his department and an honorary Professor at Cardiff University.

He was active in training trainee surgeons at all levels and maintains a keen interest in education.

He specialises in all aspects of knee surgery with a special interest in realignment surgery for lower limb deformity. Chris is also experienced in robotic assisted knee replacement as well as knee surgery and hamstring repair.
